Silicon Valley Community Foundation Awards $1.3 Million to Safety-Net Providers

Silicon Valley Community Foundation Awards $1.3 Million to Safety-Net Providers

The Silicon Valley Community Foundation has announced sixty-five grants totaling $1.3 million to organizations providing direct assistance to San Mateo and Santa Clara County residents.

With high unemployment and a steep cost of living, the region has seen increased demand for food and shelter during the current recession. The latest grants include twenty-three to food distributors, twenty-three to organizations providing shelter, fifteen to emergency assistance organizations, and four to nonprofits working to prevent homelessness.

Since December 2008, the foundation has awarded more than $5 million in discretionary grants to support safety-net service providers. Last year, the foundation collaborated with San Mateo County to jointly distribute $1 million to providers in the region. This year, however, the county was forced to make cuts to balance its budget and was unable to partner with the foundation.

"Nearly two years ago, we were one of the first funders in the Bay Area to respond to the economic crisis and we know that the need for food and shelter has not gone away," said SVCF president and CEO Emmett D. Carson. "Nonprofit organizations that experienced record levels of demand last year are seeing still more people in need of help. They simply cannot meet the region's needs without additional support."
