California Community Foundation Awards $6 Million in Grants

California Community Foundation Awards $6 Million in Grants

The California Community Foundation has announced grants totaling nearly $6 million to forty-three nonprofits serving low-income communities in Los Angeles County.

Two-fifths (41 percent) of the grants will provide project support to area nonprofits, including Collage Dance Theatre, which creates site-specific dance in public places, and LINC Housing, which will use the funds to produce service-enriched, permanent supportive housing for families, seniors, and people with special needs in Los Angeles County. Most of the rest of the grants (56 percent) were awarded for core operating support, including a two-year, $150,000 grant to help launch the Cecil Murray Center for Community Engagement at the University of Southern California's Center for Religion and Civic Culture, which will draw on the social, spiritual, and leadership capital of churches and the broader faith community to promote economic development in low-income neighborhoods.

CCF also awarded one-year, $375,000 renewal grants to five organizations that provide legal foreclosure services; they include Public Counsel and Bet Tzedek Legal Services. During the previous grant period, the groups provided outreach, education, legal advice, and counseling to thousands of homeowners, filed lawsuits or litigated sixty-nine foreclosure cases, and achieved a hundred and thirty positive resolutions for homeowners at risk of foreclosure.

"CCF is committed to making grants that will serve our communities in the midst of economic crisis right now and in the long term," said the foundation's president and CEO, Antonia Hernández. "For the last four years, we have been making core operating support grants to nonprofits in our priority areas, to sustain them through these tough times."
