New York Stem Cell Foundation Announces $24.5 Million Early Career Investigators Program

New York Stem Cell Foundation Announces $24.5 Million Early Career Investigators Program

The New York Stem Cell Foundation has announced the launch of a $24.5 million program to help cultivate the next generation of stem cell scientists.

Funded by the Robertson Foundation and the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust, the Innovator Awards Program for Early Career Investigators will provide up to $1.5 million over five years to seventeen post-doctoral investigators to launch their own laboratories, train other scientists, and foster innovative high-risk/high-reward research on the therapeutic potential of stem cells derived from humans and model organisms. A four-member jury chaired by Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and Harvard Stem Cell Institute co-director Douglas A. Melton will choose the recipients based on their demonstrated innovation in translating basic science to a clinical setting and ability to independently supervise staff and research.

Applications for the awards are due by August 27, with the first five winners to be announced in October.

"The NYSCF Innovator Awards Program provides critical seed funding to outstanding early career scientists engaged in translational stem cell research at a critical juncture in their careers," said NYSCF CEO Susan L. Solomon. "This funding will support the most promising and creative scientists as they focus on high-risk/high-reward stem cell-based research projects with the potential to accelerate the path from bench to bedside. They will nurture a new generation of stem cell scientists who will train other scientists. That is why this program has enormous potential to quickly transform the field of stem cell research and find cures that have eluded scientists for decades."
