Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Announces 2010 Graduate Scholarship Recipients
The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation in Lansdowne, Virginia, has announced the thirty-five recipients of its 2010 Graduate Scholarships.
Recipients of the scholarships will receive up to $50,000 each to assist them in their academic and professional goals. The 2010 class, which includes students from twenty states and eleven foreign countries, represents the ninth consecutive year the foundation has provided graduate scholarships. All the Cooke Scholars have distinguished themselves academically during their undergraduate career and share a strong commitment to community service. In addition, this year all the scholars were previous foundation scholarship awardees.
This year's class includes Volha Charnysh, who left Belarus to attend a small community college in the Midwest and has dedicated her life to nuclear disarmament; Lauren Spiegel, who was inspired at an early age by her mother's battle with cancer to pursue a medical degree; and Barbara Teed, a mother of four who enrolled in community college and discovered her love for writing and reporting and will work to become an investigative journalist.
"These Jack Kent Cooke Scholars are exceptional students who've been with us for quite a few years," said Cooke Foundation executive director Lawrence Kutner. "This scholarship will remove the financial pressure on them and allow them to focus on what they do best."
