Boston College Receives $20 Million Gift to Establish Leadership Academy
Boston College has announced a $20 million gift from alumnus Peter Lynch, vice chairman of Fidelity Management and Research Company, and his wife Carolyn, president and CEO of the Lynch Foundation, to launch a new educational leadership academy that will provide training and support for new school principals.
The Lynch Leadership Academy will enroll twenty-five principals drawn from Boston's public, charter, and Catholic schools in a leadership retreat, a two-week summer institute, monthly workshops, and weekly sessions with leadership coaches. Fellows also will be invited to participate in online communication and networking opportunities. By completing the program, each participant will earn three graduate school credits and a certificate in school leadership.
The Lynch School of Education at Boston College, to which the couple made a $10 million gift in 1999, will act as the sponsoring institution of the new academy. In addition, the academy will draw on expertise from BC's Carroll School of Management, Winston Center for Leadership and Ethics, William F. Connell School of Nursing, Graduate School of Social Work, and Law School, as well as successful leaders from Boston-area schools.
"Carolyn and Peter are among the first to recognize that the leaders of our Catholic, public, and charter schools all now face a similar agenda to improve instruction, raise student achievement, develop faculty, and revitalize facilities," said Lynch School of Education dean Joseph M. O'Keefe. "The Lynch Leadership Academy will bring together a diverse group of faculty experts from the BC campus, as well as education leaders from around the country, to build a new framework of leadership for the betterment of all children in our cities."
