Harold Alfond Foundation Awards $35 Million to MaineGeneral Health
MaineGeneral Health has announced a $35 million gift from the Portland-based Harold Alfond Foundation toward development of a new medical facility.
The gift, the largest ever to the MaineGeneral system, includes $25 million in core support and a $10 million matching challenge. The gift will support construction of a new hospital at the North Augusta campus of the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care as well as renovations to the Thayer Campus in Waterville. According to a study conducted last fall by the Maine Development Foundation, the project also could bring $266 million into the state in direct and indirect spending, providing a boost to the region's economy and helping to generate additional investment in central Maine.
"We are extremely humbled by and thankful to the Alfond Foundation for its support and affirmation of our vision to transform health care in the Kennebec Valley," said MaineGeneral Health president and CEO Scott Bullock. "This project is critical for the health and well being of our region. Many people have been working for a long time to develop this shared vision and we are thrilled to be so much closer to making it a reality."
