Mount Sinai Medical Center Receives $20 Million Gift
Richard Friedman, the head of the merchant banking division at Goldman Sachs, and his wife, Susan, have donated $20 million to the Mount Sinai Medical Center, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The gift, which will be used to create the Friedman Brain Institute, an interdisciplinary center dedicated to the study of the brain and nervous system, will also be leveraged to help raise an additional $50 million toward the center's $100 million capital campaign goal. A portion of the gift will be used to recruit twenty to twenty-five additional neuroscientists and expand the center's scientific and clinical research in areas such as Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, depression, and autism spectrum disorders.
Friedman has served on the center's board of trustees since 2001, but his interest in the field of neuroscience blossomed after his son started studying the field and secured a summer internship with Dr. Eric Nestler, the brain institute's director. "Brain-related issues affect more people than almost any other area of medicine," said Friedman. "This is the next frontier for scientific research and development."
