UCSD Health System Receives $75 Million for New Medical Center

UCSD Health System Receives $75 Million for New Medical Center

The University of California, San Diego Health System has announced a $75 million gift from the family of Joan and Irwin Jacobs for a medical center at the school's La Jolla campus that will integrate basic science, technology, and clinical research with healthcare delivery to improve the lives of patients.

The ten-story, 490,000-square-foot Jacobs Medical Center will be home to nearly two hundred and fifty patient beds and three new hospitals: the Cancer Hospital, the Hospital for Women and Infants, and the Hospital for Advanced Surgery. To be located adjacent to the UCSD Health System's Thornton Hospital, the new facility will be part of a collaborative network at the university that includes the UCSD School of Medicine, the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Clinical and Translational Research Institute, the Institute for Engineering in Medicine, and the Institute for Genomic Medicine.

The estimated total cost of the project is $664 million, with about $350 million of that coming from external financing, $131 million from philanthropic sources, and the remainder from state bonds, reserves, and capitalized leases. With construction slated to commence by early 2012, the center is scheduled to be complete by the summer of 2016 and to open for patient care in December 2016. The Jacobses gave $110 million to the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering in 2003, still the largest gift in the history of the university. The latest gift from the family is the largest ever received by the UCSD Health System.

"This generous and visionary gift from Joan and Irwin Jacobs and their family will allow the UC San Diego Health System to become one of the premier destination academic medical centers in the country," said UCSD chancellor Marye Anne Fox. "As a dynamic home for our translational bench-to-bedside research, the Jacobs Medical Center will also serve as an educational space for the next generation of physicians, pharmacists, and scientists."
