MacArthur Foundation Awards $2.2 Million for Haiti Relief and Reconstruction
The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has announced grants totaling $2.2 million to support relief and reconstruction efforts in Haiti.
Awarded to four organizations with strong track records in the impoverished country, the grants will largely address long-term needs in the areas of health and communications. Grants announced by the foundation include $1 million to international healthcare organization Partners in Health to build and staff a full-service hospital in Mirebalais and offer medical and nursing training to fill a gap created when University Hospital in Port-au-Prince was destroyed by the quake; and $175,000 to Internews, an international media development organization, to fund training for new media partners so that the organization can expand its work beyond Port-au-Prince and begin reporting on country-wide reconstruction issues.
In addition, grants of $500,000 were awarded to the United Nations Population Fund to refurbish and upgrade the maternity unit at the Croix de Bouquets health clinic in Port-au-Prince, as well as the International Planned Parenthood Federation/Western Hemisphere to support efforts to increase access to sexual, reproductive, maternal, and child health services among the displaced population using mobile health units, field clinics, and a referral center.
"MacArthur's support," said MacArthur Foundation president Robert Gallucci, "is designed to have a lasting impact in Haiti as the nation works to rebuild lives, infrastructure, and institutions."
