People in the News (11/15/09): Appointments and Promotions
The Obama administration has named RAJIV J. SHAH to head the United States Agency for International Development, an appointment that must be confirmed by the Senate. Shah, currently chief scientist and undersecretary for research, education, and economics at the Agriculture Department, earlier served as director of agricultural development and as director for strategic opportunities at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and also managed the foundation's $1.5 billion investment in the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI). Before joining the Gates Foundation, Shah was a healthcare policy advisor to Al Gore's presidential campaign and a member of Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell's transition committee on health.
The New York City-based Rockefeller Foundation has announced the appointment of ZIA KHAN as vice president for strategy and evaluation. Khan, previously a partner and vice president of management consulting firm Booz & Company, established and led Katzenbach Partners' San Francisco office before that company merged with Booz & Co. A frequent speaker and writer on organizational dynamics and transformational strategies, he holds a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Cornell University and a Ph.D. from Stanford University in fluid dynamics and thermosciences.
NARSAD (National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression) in Great Neck, New York, has announced the appointment of BENITA F. SHOBE as president and CEO. Shobe, former senior vice president of development and field operations for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International, earlier served as vice president for chapter development for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and as executive director of the Northern California Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
The New York City-based Endometriosis Foundation of America has announced the appointment of CARI SIETSTRA as acting director and CAROLYN GOLTRA as director of development. Sietstra, founder and former CEO of Law Students for Reproductive Justice, is a consultant in reproductive health, education, and justice issues in Thailand/Burma and the United States. Goltra, most recently a major gifts associate at Weill Cornell Medical Center, is a candidate for a master's degree in social entrepreneurship at New York University.
The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has appointed JOHN AYERS as vice president and treasurer. Ayers, an education advocate and reformer, most recently launched the Chicago-based school management organization Union Park High Schools and is a senior associate at the National Association of Charter School Authorizers. His new position stems from the foundation's decision to merge two leadership positions as part of a larger administrative reorganization.
In other news, the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Washington, D.C., has announced the retirement of RICHARD MOE as president. Moe, the longest-serving president in the sixty-year history of the trust, will stay on board until a successor has been named next year. Before joining the trust, he served as chief of staff to Vice President Walter Mondale and as a member of President Jimmy Carter's senior staff from 1977 to 1981.
