Verizon Foundation Awards $1.5 Million for Domestic Violence Prevention Efforts
The Verizon Foundation in Basking Ridge, New Jersey has announced $1.5 million in grants to California-based nonprofits working to address the problem of domestic violence.
The grants will provide support for domestic violence education, advocacy, and prevention initiatives. Over the past three years, the foundation has awarded more than $5 million to nonprofits in California for similar efforts. Recipients in this latest round of funding include the Congress of California Seniors and Self-Help for the Elderly, which were awarded $300,000 for outreach and advocacy efforts related to the Commitment to End Abuse of Seniors and Elders (CEASE) program; the Los Angeles-based Jenesse Center, which was awarded $250,000 to create a program that empowers domestic violence survivors to use Web-based training and other computer technology to gain job skills and become economically self-sufficient; and Temecula-based Safe Alternatives for Everyone, which was awarded $54,000 for the Boys Council and Girls Circle, a violence prevention and intervention program.
"The impact of domestic violence is devastating and universal: It can impact anyone regardless of race or income level," said Tim McCallion, region president of Verizon West. "These partnerships allow us to continue to use our resources to support organizations that have a proven record of success in domestic violence awareness, prevention, and survivor support."
