People in the News (11/08/09): Appointments and Promotions
The Seattle-based Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has named KATE JAMES as chief communications officer. Most recently senior vice president for global corporate communications at Citibank, James earlier served as head of public affairs at Standard Chartered Bank in London and was a senior leader at Glaxo SmithKline, for which she managed external relations in Latin America, Canada, Asia, Australia, and Africa.
The Duke Endowment in Charlotte, North Carolina, has named BILL BACON as director of evaluation. Bacon served five years as a grantmaker and evaluator at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation in California and prior to that served as an evaluation consultant in the fields of mental health, youth development, and teen pregnancy prevention. He also serves on the board of the Healthy Teen Network.
The Minneapolis-based McKnight Foundation has named KARYN SCIORTINO as international program administrator. In that role, Sciortino will work to support women's social and economic empowerment in Tanzania and Uganda and community building in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. Previously, she served in the foundation's children and families program, and prior to that she was the community affairs administrator for the Saint Paul Companies and the leadership and a team development training coordinator for the Target Corporation.
The Skoll Foundation in Palo Alto, California, has appointed BEN BINSWANGER as vice president of its program and impact group. Binswanger, a longtime senior executive with experience in philanthropy, business, and government, was most recently chief operating officer of the Case Foundation and formerly held senior posts in communications and civic engagement at AOL and Time Warner. He began his career as campaign director for Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and served for five years as his political director.
The Dallas-based Susan G. Komen for the Cure has named MONA LEE LOCKE as national operations director for Washington, D.C. Most recently, Locke served as executive director of Komen's Puget Sound affiliate, where she was responsible for fundraising, marketing, grantmaking, and advocacy. She also founded and served as board chair of the Foundation for Early Learning. Prior to working in the nonprofit sector, she held positions in broadcast news at several local television stations and was the Capitol Hill correspondent for the CBS affiliate in Topeka, Kansas.
In other news, the Impact Fund in Berkeley, California, has announced JOCELYN LARKIN as deputy executive director. Larkin, a frequent speaker on employment law, ethics, and civil rights issues, most recently was the fund's director of litigation and training. In addition, she served as the co-editor of the class action chapter in Employment Discrimination Law and is the newsletter editor of the ABA Litigation Section's Class Actions and Derivative Suits Committee. Previously, she worked with Farnsworth, Saperstein, and Seligman and served as the firm's managing director until leaving to found the Oakland-based law firm Ryu, Dickey & Larkin in 1992.
