ExxonMobil, National Community Action Foundation Award $4 Million to Train Weatherization Workers
ExxonMobil and the National Community Action Foundation have announced grants totaling $4 million to nine community organizations around the country to help train workers in weatherization techniques designed to improve the energy efficiency of low-income homes.
Awarded through the $5 million ExxonMobil/NCAF Weatherization Training Partnership program, the grants will provide support to organizations with innovative approaches to enhancing the training of workers delivering services through the Department of Energy's Weatherization Assistance Program. Grantees were selected based on their ability to form meaningful partnerships with groups from other sectors, create models that will help prepare weatherization workers to pursue a career in energy efficiency, and build the capacity of weatherization programs to make 750,000 homes more energy efficient, a goal established by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Grants of between $300,000 and nearly $1 million were awarded to Action Housing, Inc. in Pittsburgh; the Energy Coordinating Agency in Philadelphia; the Indianapolis-based Indiana Community Action Association; the Community Services Agency in Reno, Nevada; the Association for Energy Affordability in New York City; the Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development in Athens, Ohio; the Community Housing Partners Corporation in Christiansburg, Virginia; the Community Action Team in St. Helens, Oregon; and the Montana Weatherization Training Center at MSU in Bozeman, Montana.
"The winners of the ExxonMobil/NCAF grants are combining the expertise of community action agencies, educators, workforce development experts, and the private sector to give weatherization workers the best tools to help communities take advantage of one of our greatest resources — energy efficiency," said Sherman Glass, president of ExxonMobil's Refining and Supply Company. "ExxonMobil is committed to improving energy efficiency in our own operations and around the world, and today's grants will extend that commitment to communities in America."
