California
The Marin Community Foundation has announced a new investment option, the Marin Community Investment Pool, which is designed to match donors with community efforts in Marin County while growing the assets in their foundation-administered funds. The assets in the pool will be managed within the foundation's existing MCF loan fund, which provides short- and long-term financing to a wide range of nonprofit endeavors in Marin, including affordable housing, environmental protection, and arts education.
North Carolina
The Charlotte-based Foundation for the Carolinas has announced a new program designed to provide area nonprofits with support for strategic transformations, including innovative service models, collaborations, partnerships, and mergers. Known as the Community Catalyst Program, the initiative is designed to help nonprofits reposition themselves to meet a future characterized by increased demands for services and diminished funding.
Ohio
The Cleveland Foundation has announced the opening of the latest exhibition in its "Showcasing Emerging Artists" series, a collaborative project involving the Cleveland Foundation, Case Western Reserve University, and the Cleveland Institute of Art. "Pondering Patterns" opened on October 29 and will run through February 5, 2010.
Pennsylvania
The Pittsburgh Foundation has announced that area donors helped drive more than $1 million in twenty-three minutes to local nonprofits through its online Pittsburgh Gives initiative. After opening the campaign at 10:00 on Wednesday morning, the foundation had exhausted $300,000 in matching funds, along with half of a separate $100,000 made available to match gifts for the Carnegie Libraries of Pittsburgh, by 10:23. While the foundation acknowledged that the PittsburghGives.org site was challenged by the heavy traffic and demand, it promised to work with its technology partners to resolve the problems for future drives.
Tennessee
The Nashville-based Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee has announced that its third annual Coats for the Counties event will be held prior to the Vanderbilt-Kentucky football game at Vanderbilt Stadium on November 14. Those attending the game are encouraged to drop off new and gently used winter coats and other winter apparel at each of the stadium's main gates. The clothes will be distributed to needy children in rural counties surrounding the metropolitan area.
Washington, D.C.
In a recent blog post, Community Foundation of the National Capital Region president Terri Lee Freeman noted that the foundation's Neighbors in Need Montgomery Fund received more than $18,000 as a result of sales generated during Whole Foods Markets' "5 Percent" day on October 21. In addition to receiving a portion of sales proceeds, the foundation collected some 2,600 pounds of donated food for Carpenter's Shelter in Silver Spring and the Manna Food Center in Rockville.
