Drucker Institute Announces 2009 Award Winners
The Drucker Institute at Claremont Graduate University has announced the winners of the 2009 Peter F. Drucker Award for Nonprofit Innovation.
Awarded annually since 1991, the Drucker Award recognizes existing programs that have made a difference in the lives of the people they serve. Through at least 2015, the cash prize awarded to the first-place winner will be increased from $35,000 to $100,000, thanks to a grant from the Coca-Cola Foundation.
This year, the recipient of the first-place prize is the Center for Court Innovation, a New York City-based think tank that works to help courts and criminal justice agencies aid victims, reduce crime, and improve public trust in the justice system. The second- and third-place prizes, carrying awards of $7,500 and $5,000 respectively, were awarded to Urban Farming, a Detroit-based organization that turns unused land in the city into food-producing gardens, and the Population Media Center in Shelburne, Vermont, which uses serialized melodramas written in country-specific languages to impart positive behavioral lessons.
"We're enormously proud to be associated with the past winners of this prize and with the spirit of Peter Drucker," said Greg Berman, director of the Center for Court Innovation. "Like Drucker, we believe in the transformative potential of the social sector."
