GE Foundation Launches $25 Million Initiative to Improve Access to Health Care in U.S. Cities
The GE Foundation, in partnership with its parent company and the GE Corporate Diversity Council, has announced the launch of a three-year, $25 million initiative to increase access to primary care for underserved individuals across the country.
Building on GE's Developing Health Globally initiative, which was launched in 2004 to improve access to health care in Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, the Developing Health initiative will provide grants and GE employee engagement to nonprofit health centers in select U.S. communities. Criteria for the grants will include need, community impact, leadership, transparency, and accountability.
The initiative is being launched in New York City, where grants totaling $1 million have been awarded to the Bedford Stuyvesant Family Health Center, Urban Health Plan, the Brownsville Multi-Service Family Health Center, and the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center. Additional cities will be selected based on their local GE employee presence and robustness of their GE Affinity Network. The foundation will not accept unsolicited requests for support.
"With GE resources and the commitment of our employees, we have been successful in driving real, sustainable improvement around the world through the Developing Health Globally program," said GE Foundation president Bob Corcoran. "Our aim here is to combine foundation resources with our human capital to improve access to quality health care in America, beginning in New York City."
