Lilly Endowment Awards $2 Million to Support I-STEM Resource Network
The Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment has announced a $2 million grant to support the Indiana-Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Resource Network, an initiative of the Central Indiana Corporate Partnership Foundation.
Established in 2007 with a $3.4 million grant from the endowment, the I-STEM Resource Network is a statewide consortium of eighteen higher education institutions dedicated to improving student achievement in elementary and secondary schools. Over the last two years, the network has focused on providing research-based professional development programs for current Indiana math teachers. The network, in partnership with the Indiana Department of Education, is also involved in building a strategic plan for science education reform in the state.
Participating institutions include Purdue University, which provides day-to-day management of the network; Ball State University; Calumet College of St. Joseph; Indiana University; Indiana University Northwest; Indiana University Southeast; Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne; Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis; Marian University; the Northern Indiana Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Collaboration; the Northwest Indiana Consortium for Teacher Education; Purdue Calumet; Purdue North Central; Purdue West Lafayette; the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology; the University of Southern Indiana; Valparaiso University; and the University of Indianapolis.
"Lilly Endowment is pleased to support the I-STEM Network, which impressively marshals the intellectual resources of Indiana colleges and universities," said Sara B. Cobb, vice president for education at the Lilly Endowment. "This unprecedented collaboration should significantly help K-12 teachers enhance the impact of their teaching in these STEM disciplines so critical to our state's future," added Cobb.
