Kresge Foundation Announces $43.7 Million in Third-Quarter Grants
The Kresge Foundation, in Troy, Michigan, has announced 268 grants totaling $43.7 million to organizations in twenty-six states, the District of Columbia, and South Africa working in the areas of human services, education, arts and culture, health, community development, and the environment.
The grants will be used to improve the long-term life circumstances of the poor while providing immediate relief to those in greatest need as a result of the economic downturn. The awards include a $2.5 million program-related investment to Chicago-based Feeding America to finance the purchase of up to twenty-five refrigerated trucks for acquiring and distributing donated food and a $1 million grant to the National Advising Corps at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to expand its program of placing its recent graduates as college-access counselors in underserved high schools and community colleges.
In addition, the foundation awarded $900,000 to Unite L.A., which helps Los Angeles high-school students learn about and secure federal and state financial aid, and $1 million to Enterprise Community Partners, a Maryland-based nonprofit dedicated to creating affordable housing for low- and moderate-income individuals and families.
