Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Announces Recipients of 2009 Community Health Leaders Award
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has announced the ten recipients of its 2009 Community Health Leaders Award, which honors individuals who have overcome significant challenges to improve the health and quality of life for disadvantaged or underserved people across the country.
Amid the often contentious national debate about healthcare reform, this year's awardees have undertaken a range of projects that demonstrate weaknesses in the nation's healthcare system as well as a need to provide greater access to affordable, high-quality care. Now in its sixteenth year, the program provides each honoree with an award of $125,000 and a variety of networking opportunities.
"As our leaders in Washington are working on national health reform, the 2009 Community Health Leaders have been addressing the shortcomings and challenges facing our nation's health care system in their communities," said RWJF president and CEO Risa Lavizzo-Mourey. "These leaders are important pillars of their community and of the healthcare system, who have taken personal and professional risks to help the people in their communities live healthier, better lives."
