AT&T, United Way Launch $2 Million Initiative to Boost Parent Engagement in High Schools
AT&T and United Way Worldwide have announced the launch of the Family Engagement for High School Success initiative, which is designed to help families of disadvantaged children get more involved in their child's education.
The initiative is a response to findings from a recent study conducted for AT&T by Civic Enterprises and Peter Hart Research with America's Promise Alliance which found that the majority of teachers and principals believe that increasing their school's parental outreach programs would significantly help reduce the number of high school dropouts.
To that end, twenty local and state United Ways will receive grants to identify family engagement practices that boost high school graduation rates. Among other things, the sites will use the funds to increase family-community-school partnerships, build successful learning in high school, and explore texting tools as part of that work. AT&T will award $2 million to support the effort through its Aspire initiative, while United Way Worldwide will re-grant up to $50,000 to selected local United Ways that can secure matching funds.
"United Way is proud to partner with AT&T to address one of the most important issues our communities face — ensuring students graduate on time and receive a quality education," said Brian Gallagher, president and CEO of United Way Worldwide. "There is no better way to achieve sustainable success for our nation's young people than by creating opportunities to also engage their families."
