California Community Foundation Awards $2.9 Million to Los Angeles-Area Organizations

The California Community Foundation has announced grants totaling $2.9 million to thirty Los Angeles-area organizations working in the areas of education, health care, human services, community building, affordable housing and low-income communities, and the arts.

More than half the awards, which range in amount from $47,500 to $175,000, are renewal grants that provide core operating support to help organizations weather the recession. Recipients include the California Association for Bilingual Education, which works to provide parents with the skills and knowledge they need to support their children's learning; the San Gabriel Valley Foundation for Economic Growth, which will assess economic development opportunities in El Monte with the help of the Planning Center; the Skid Row Housing Trust, which builds and preserves permanent housing; and WISE and Healthy Aging, which provide adult day care services and advocacy on behalf the elderly.

"It's critical that we support the great work of our grantees during these challenging times," said California Community Foundation president and CEO Antonia Hernández. "These grants can help them respond better to growing demand for their services and ultimately become more sustainable."
