Haverford College Receives $10 Million Challenge Grant
Haverford College in Haverford, Pennsylvania, has announced a $10 million challenge grant from the Jaharis Family Foundation to support the construction of the college's first new dormitory since 1968.
To secure the gift, the college must raise an additional $10 million in support of at least one of its key fundraising priorities — academic enrichment, financial aid, or buildings — by December 31, 2012. Steven M. Jaharis, a 1982 graduate of the school and a member of its board of managers, said his participation in the master plan steering committee enabled him to see how important a new dormitory would be for his alma mater.
According to Haverford president Stephen G. Emerson, the dormitory will create social space in other dorms that have had to create living space out of what had been common areas as the college expanded over the years. The new facility also will allow the college to increase the number of freshmen living at the core of the campus.
"This gift is remarkable for another reason," said Michael Kiefer, Haverford's vice president for institutional advancement. "At a time of great economic uncertainty, it sends a signal. People are still giving to those organizations and institutions that matter to them, and for Steve Jaharis the promise of Haverford's mission is enduring. Steve and his family know that the strength and resilience of Haverford, like all of higher education, depends on philanthropic support."
