Community Foundation Update (10/03/09)

California

The Sacramento Region Community Foundation has announced ten grants totaling $100,000 from its Greatest Need Fund to provide immediate support and assistance to those most in need as a result of the recession. Recipients include Roseville Home Start, River City Community Services, the Center for Families and Fathers, and California Emergency Foodlink.

Colorado

The Denver Foundation has announced a $1 million gift from the Pioneer Fund to create the Lewis E. Myers Caregivers Fund, which will provide the spouses, parents, and other unpaid caregivers of wounded military personnel with financial assistance, including help with rent, utilities, mortgage and car payments, food, and other immediate needs. The fund, whose namesake died while serving on the USS Trout during World War II, initially will support caregivers through Operation HomeFront.

Betsey Jay has stepped down as executive director of the Steamboat Springs-based Yampa Valley Community Foundation, the Steamboat Pilot & Today reports. She had led the foundation since 2007.

Georgia

The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta has announced that it is communicating with its community partners and local residents about ways in which it can help victims of the recent storms and flooding in the region. On its Web site, the foundation has posted an initial list of agencies and faith-based groups providing assistance. Maine

The Ellsworth-based Maine Community Foundation has announced that its president and CEO, Meredith Jones, was one of five recipients of the 2009 Deborah Morton Award, which is presented by the trustees of the University of New England to women who have achieved high distinction in their careers and public service or whose leadership in civic, cultural, or social causes has been exceptional. The four other recipients this year were Kate Cheney Chappell, artist and co-founder of Tom's of Maine; Josephine "Dodie" Detmer, longtime teacher and community volunteer; Laurie Lachance, president of the Maine Development Foundation; and UNE president emeritus Sandra Featherman, Ph.D.

Michigan

The Mt. Pleasant Area Community Foundation has named Amanda Schafer as its new executive director. She succeeds Stan Rathbun, who led the foundation for five years.

Ohio

The Columbus Foundation has announced that the deadline for organizations in Chillicothe and Ross counties to submit grant applications to its Robert E. and Genevieve B. Schaefer Fund is October 30. The Schaefer Fund awards grants to organizations working in the areas of cultural development, health and human welfare, and economic development.
