Lincoln Center Receives $10 Million Gift for Redevelopment Project
Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts has announced a $10 million gift from its vice chairman, David M. Rubenstein, to support the redevelopment of its campus on Manhattan's Upper West Side.
As part of its fiftieth anniversary celebration, the center is currently renovating, modernizing, and opening up its sixteen-acre campus. In honor of Rubenstein's gift, the performing arts mecca's newly converted visitor center and ticketing facility will be renamed the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center. Scheduled to open November 24, the space will serve as a gateway to the Lincoln Center campus, offering access to last-minute, discount, and full-price tickets to performances; free weekly performances; a café; a meeting point for expanded Lincoln Center tours; a staffed information desk; and free wireless Internet access.
As chairman of Lincoln Center's campaign steering committee, Rubenstein, the co-founder and managing director of the Carlyle Group, a private equity firm, has been charged with raising capital funds to support the center's physical transformation. Under Rubenstein's leadership, the center has raised some $600 million.
"[The] David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center is a unique reflection of civic investment, community engagement, and audience development," said Lincoln Center president Reynold Levy. "Thanks to David's generous gift, we are able to replace a previously underutilized, neglected space with an innovative civic center that will benefit New Yorkers and visitors from around the world. It is completely open to the public."
The Atrium at Lincoln Center Will Be Named After David Rubenstein in Honor of His $10 Million Gift.
