Hewlett Foundation Awards $8.2 Million to Help Diverse, Low-Income California Communities

The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation in Menlo Park, California, has announced that during the spring it awarded $8.2 million in grants to thirty-six organizations serving diverse and low-income communities across the state.

Funding was awarded in each of the foundation's four primary grantmaking areas for California: population, the environment, education, and performing arts. The grants included $600,000 to the Los Angeles-based Advancement Project to promote ethnic and racial equality in educational settings; $350,000 to the San Francisco Foundation for its Environmental Health and Justice Capacity Building Fund; and $300,000 to the San Francisco-based Community Music Center to continue its comprehensive teaching, ensemble, and performance program.

In addition, the foundation awarded $75,000 to BUILD in Palo Alto to evaluate the effectiveness of its work and $30,000 to the San Francisco-based Latino Community Foundation for strategic planning efforts.
