Blue Shield of California Foundation Awards $5 Million to Strengthen Safety Net
The San Francisco-based Blue Shield of California Foundation has announced more than $5 million in grants to support initiatives that provide critical health services to Californians in need while strengthening the state's long-term healthcare capacity.
The majority of the third-quarter awards will be used to strengthen the state's safety net, including up to $1.5 million to help regional health clinic consortia train and assist their member clinics on how to manage during difficult economic times. The foundation also awarded nearly $2 million to the University of California, San Francisco's Center for the Health Professions to continue its Clinic Leadership Institute, which trains emerging leaders in community clinics and health centers. A $300,000 grant to the California Primary Care Association will be used to ensure that policy makers have input from California clinics when making decisions that impact safety-net financing.
In addition, BSCF awarded $500,000 in grants to prevent and address domestic violence in military families; $130,000 to further efforts by the Nonprofit Finance Fund to help a dozen shelters manage immediate financial challenges; and $125,000 to teach a hundred domestic-violence service providers the skills they need to help their agencies adapt to the current environment.

"This crisis reinforces our commitment to meeting the needs of today while also strengthening the safety net for tomorrow by providing core support, capacity building, and leadership development."
