Weinberg Foundation to Distribute $200 Million Over Next Two Years
The Baltimore-based Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation has announced that it will distribute grants totaling $200 million over the next two years, including $21 million in new grant funds.
Despite the economic challenges stemming from the recession, the Weinberg Foundation will maintain its usual level of grantmaking, which averages about $100 million per year. Last year, the foundation awarded about $106 million to six hundred nonprofits, including $39 million to groups in Maryland. According to trustee Donn Weinberg, who will take over as chair of the foundation in early 2010, the foundation will honor all its current grant commitments while maintaining its current staffing level.
The foundation, which temporarily suspended its grant application process in November, will begin accepting letters of inquiry for the newly available grant funds on August 3. Funding areas at the foundation include older adults; workforce development; education, children, youth, and families; disabilities and health; basic human needs; and small grants to Maryland nonprofits.
"In the world today, the Weinberg Foundation's mission to help those in need is more important than ever," said Weinberg COO and newly elected president of the foundation Rachel Monroe. "We look forward to working with hundreds of nonprofits in Baltimore, the U.S., and Israel to navigate the uncertainties and take advantage of the opportunities that lie before us."
