Joyce Foundation Awards $1.9 Million for Milwaukee River Basin Initiative
The Southeastern Wisconsin Watersheds Trust has announced a three-year, $1.9 million grant from the Chicago-based Joyce Foundation for an initiative designed to improve water quality in the Milwaukee River Basin.
In partnership with government and university groups, SWWT and seven state and local environmental organizations will work to develop projects that produce measurable improvements in water quality and habitat, starting with the Menomonee and Kinnickinnic river watersheds. The grant will support the establishment of project priorities, data collection, and policy analysis designed to improve water quality and habitat as well as the health and economic strength of communities in the Greater Milwaukee River watershed.
In addition to SWWT, the environmental partners receiving funding are 1000 Friends of Wisconsin, Clean Wisconsin, Midwest Environmental Advocates, Milwaukee RiverKeeper, the River Alliance of Wisconsin, the River Revitalization Foundation, and the Sixteenth Street Community Health Center. Each group will apply its particular function and expertise to help engage businesses, municipalities, and watershed-area residents in the planning process while creating an integrated, long-lasting structure to support watershed restoration throughout the region.
"This investment provides enormous momentum toward making measurable improvements in our water quality," said SWWT executive steering council chairman Pat Marchese. "The grant will enable the trust and its environmental partners to work collaboratively to build community support for implementing cost-effective water quality improvement projects in the Greater Milwaukee watersheds."
