National Endowment for the Arts Distributes $29.8 Million in Stimulus Funds
The National Endowment for the Arts has awarded nearly $29.8 million to more than six hundred arts organizations around the country as part of the $50 million in federal aid set aside for the NEA in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Distributed to organizations in all fifty states, the District of Columbia, and several U.S. territories, the grants build on $19.8 million in sub-grants the NEA awarded in April to state and regional arts agencies. Mostly ranging in size from $25,000 to $50,000, with local government-affiliated cultural organizations receiving up to $250,000 each, the grants, according to the NEA, are intended "to support the preservation of jobs that are threatened by declines in philanthropic and other support during the current economic downturn."
Representing a range of artistic disciplines, the grantees include the L.A. County Arts Commission ($250,000); Ballet Hispanico of New York ($50,000); the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe ($50,000); the Washington, D.C.-based PEN/Faulkner Foundation ($50,000); the Opera Company of Philadelphia ($50,000); Public Radio International in Minneapolis ($50,000); and the Seattle Theatre Group ($25,000).
