California Community Foundation Announces 2009 Artist Fellowships
The California Community Foundation has announced one-year fellowships to fourteen emerging and mid-career artists working in painting, sculpture, performance art, experimental film/video, and multimedia in the Los Angeles area.
Ten mid-career artists with at least seven years of active, professional experience each received a $20,000 fellowship to acknowledge and nurture their work, while four emerging artists with less than seven years of professional experience each received $15,000 to encourage them in their early stages of development. The fellows were selected by a panel of local artists, curators, and arts experts from a pool of 549 applicants — 27 percent more than applied last year.
Support for the fellowships is provided by the J. Paul Getty Trust Fund for the Visual Arts, the Brody Arts Fund, the Atlass Fund, the Joan Palevsky Endowment for the Future of Los Angeles, and other CCF funds.
"In these challenging times, we need art more than ever," said CCF president and CEO Antonia Hernández. "At CCF, we value creativity and the role of artistic expression as a source of great inspiration to the community. We are pleased to help these gifted artists move forward in their careers through these highly competitive fellowships."
