Cleveland Foundation Awards $15.3 Million in Second-Quarter Grants
The Cleveland Foundation has announced second-quarter grants totaling $15.3 million to nonprofit organizations in the Greater Cleveland area, with a significant portion of the total designated to help nonprofits fulfill their missions during the economic downturn.
Grantees include the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, which will receive $831,000 to help establish new, high-performing schools; Invest in Children, which was awarded $500,000 to evaluate its programs, increase public outreach, and strengthen existing services; the Cleveland Leadership Center, which will receive $565,000 to encourage careers in the public and nonprofit sectors; the Cuyahoga County Treasurer's Office, which was awarded $250,000 to expand its Foreclosure Prevention Program to several Cleveland suburbs; and the American Red Cross, Greater Cleveland Chapter, which will receive $250,000 to continue responding to basic human needs in the community.
In addition, the foundation awarded a total of $1.45 million through its Sustaining Excellence Program to eight local arts groups that have risk-taking business models. Grantees included the Cleveland Orchestra ($500,000); the Community Partnership for Arts and Culture ($300,000); and the Cleveland Play House ($150,000).
"Normally, the foundation spends about one-third of our flexible grant dollars responding to direct requests from nonprofits and two-thirds proactively directing dollars into areas we deem critical to the community," said Robert Eckardt, senior vice president for programs and evaluation at the foundation. "But given the difficult economy, this quarter a larger than normal percentage of our grantmaking is responsive to requests from the community."
Cleveland Foundation Grants Total $15.3 Million.
