UC Information Technology Research Center Receives Engineering Software Valued at $57 Million

UC Information Technology Research Center Receives Engineering Software Valued at $57 Million

Siemens PLM Software, a global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, has announced an in-kind gift of software and support services valued at $57 million to the University of California's Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS), a four-campus institute shared by four University of California campuses: Berkeley, Davis, Merced, and Santa Cruz.

Provided through the Siemens GO PLM (Global Opportunities in Product Lifecycle Management) program, the gift includes engineering software, instructor training, and academic support for students and staff at all four campuses. CITRIS director and UC Berkeley mechanical engineering professor Paul Wright said the software is a leading finite element analysis, meshing, and visualization solution for a wide variety of modeling in all fields of engineering, and that more than a thousand students, research staff, and professors are expected to use it.

"This generous investment will boost our students' design skills and give them a competitive edge in the engineering workforce," said S. Shankar Sastry, dean of engineering at UC Berkeley. "We're especially excited to use it in design project courses, where student groups create comprehensive engineering solutions to problems in health care, transportation, manufacturing, and commercial environments."
