Yale Receives $50 Million to Establish Global Affairs Institute
Yale University has announced a $50 million gift from alumnus John W. Jackson and his wife, Susan, to establish a global affairs institute that inspires and prepares students to pursue careers in diplomacy and public service.
The Jackson Institute for Global Affairs will offer courses to Yale students who are interested in global affairs while providing career counseling and placement services for any Eli who wishes to pursue a career in diplomatic service or with international agencies or nongovernmental organizations. The institute also will assume responsibility for the university's core teaching programs in international affairs, including an expanded undergraduate international studies major and master's program in international relations.
Initially, the institute will recruit four tenured members of Yale's faculty to teach half their courses in the undergraduate international studies program and the international relations master's program. In addition, the university will recruit at least four international affairs practitioners as senior fellows to teach, counsel, and mentor students who aspire to public and international service. A summer internship program will facilitate entry into those careers, with financial aid for students in the international relations program provided as part of the Jacksons' gift.
Scheduled to open in the fall of 2010, the institute is designed to help transform the university into a global institution. "The Jackson Institute will become a signature program, marking Yale's global aspirations," said university president Richard C. Levin. "Its teaching programs will permeate the university, expanding the curriculum in international affairs so that students in all its schools are better prepared for global leadership and service. I am profoundly grateful to John W. and Susan G. Jackson for their transformational gift."
