Boston Foundation Awards $3.4 Million in First-Quarter Grants

The Boston Foundation has announced first-quarter grants totaling nearly $3.4 million to nonprofits serving residents of the greater Boston area. The foundation also distributed more than $12.2 million from donor-advised funds.

Several grants were awarded to organizations working to address environmental issues, including $250,000 to the Boston Energy Alliance to chart the city's response to climate change and coordinate the provision of sustainable energy services to Boston businesses and residents; and $21,500 to the East Boston YMCA for its Urban Ecology Project at Mario Umana Middle School Academy. In addition, through its education and out-of-school-time programs the foundation awarded $200,000 to Achieving the Dream to help improve outcomes for students enrolled in community college; $80,000 to Associated Grant Makers to provide operating grants to summer camp programs; and $25,000 to the KIPP Academy Lynn Charter School to hire a strategic planning consultant.

Other grants included $500,000 to the Allied Health Initiative for its efforts to build a pipeline of skilled health workers from local communities; $50,000 to the Actors' Shakespeare Project for general operating support; and $25,000 to the Southwest Boston Community Development Corporation to explore a strategic collaboration with another community development corporation. The foundation also awarded an unrestricted $75,000 "Out of the Blue" grant to the Hyde Square Task Force, which serves youth in the Jamaica Plain and Roxbury neighborhoods.
