Cleveland Foundation Awards $10 Million in First-Quarter Grants

The Cleveland Foundation has announced first-quarter grants totaling $10 million to support economic transformation, public school improvement, youth development, neighborhoods and housing, and other areas critical to the region's economic vitality and quality of life.

Grantees include ShoreBank Enterprise Group Cleveland, which was awarded $2.25 million to help establish a network of businesses in the Greater University Circle area; Case Western Reserve University, which will receive $1.5 million to expand its Center for Proteomic Medicine; Neighborhood Progress, which was awarded $827,000 for its strategic investment and vacant property reform initiatives; and the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority, which will receive $450,000 for economic development projects targeting the St. Clair-Superior neighborhood.

In addition, the foundation awarded a total of $1.2 million in youth development grants, including $750,000 to the Neighborhood Leadership Institute to implement youth programs in eight Cuyahoga County neighborhoods and $150,000 to the Cuyahoga County Department of Workforce Development for its summer youth-employment program.

"The current economic crisis is challenging to grantmakers and nonprofit agencies alike," said Robert E. Eckardt, senior vice president for programs and evaluation at the Cleveland Foundation. "We remain committed to helping those groups that improve people's daily lives, as well as to supporting long-term, proactive initiatives for strengthening Cleveland."
