2009 Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship Announced

2009 Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship Announced

The Skoll Foundation in Palo Alto, California, has announced the recipients of the 2009 Skoll Awards for Social Entrepreneurship, with awards totaling $5.35 million to seven organizations.

The awards will provide unrestricted, three-year grants of $765,000 each to social entrepreneurs whose models for sustainable change have already demonstrated significant success in the areas of tolerance and human rights, health, environmental sustainability, peace and security, and economic and social equity. The 2009 awardees include entrepreneurs working to promote cooperation in the Middle East with respect to the region's water resources, develop examples of how to build viable contemporary communities that are environmentally sustainable, and connect microfinance to the issue of water access.

This year's Skoll Award recipients are the BioRegional Development Group, EcoPeace/Friends of the Earth Middle East, Fundacion Gaia Amazonas, INJAZ Al-Arab, the International Center for Transitional Justice, VisionSpring, and WaterPartners International.

"Today's difficult economic environment makes it all the more important to identify organizations that are tackling tough issues and delivering real and sustainable results," said Skoll Foundation president and CEO Sally Osberg. "Unrestricted funding is particularly valuable against the current economic backdrop, since it provides these entrepreneurs with the flexibility they need to adapt to such difficult challenges."

For more information on this year's awardees, visit the Skoll Foundation Web site.
