Civic Ventures Announces 2008 Purpose Prize Winners
San Francisco-based Civic Ventures has announced the winners of the 2008 Purpose Prize, which recognizes social entrepreneurs age 60 and older.
Six winners were awarded $100,000 each, while nine others will receive $10,000 each. Now in its third year, the Purpose Prize is part of the Encore Careers campaign, which is designed to challenge millions of boomers facing retirement to consider combining social impact, personal meaning, and continued income in the second half of life, while producing a windfall of human talent to solve society's most pressing issues.
Funded by Atlantic Philanthropies and the John Templeton Foundation, the prize is considered to be the nation's only large-scale investment in social innovators in the second half of life.
More than a thousand people were nominated for their efforts to tackle problems such as poverty, recidivism, and homelessness. For the first time, Americans doing work abroad also were eligible to win, and one such winner was awarded $100,000, while two others won $10,000.
"In tough economic times, we need more creative solutions to long-standing social problems," said Marc Freedman, Purpose Prize co-founder and the author of Encore: Finding Work That Matters in the Second Half of Life. "It's reassuring to note that as America ages, we have creativity in greater abundance. Purpose Prize winners, ranging in age this year from 61 to 72, show that experience and innovation can go hand in hand, that inventiveness is not the sole province of the young."
