Louisiana Oil Industry Association Asked to Raise $2.4 Million for Generators
Governor Bobby Jindal has asked the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil & Gas Association to raise $2.4 million from corporate foundations to finance a fleet of generators to power gas stations closed by Hurricane Gustav, the Times-Picayune reports.
While the state has gas supplies for the near term, power outages across southern Louisiana are keeping retailers from running their stations. The generators, which cost about $12,000 apiece, would be acquired and distributed to two hundred gas stations in key locations by the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, which will retain the generators for use in a future emergency after the immediate need is satisfied.
According to former Congressman Chris John, who heads Mid-Continent, the association's membership includes oil exploration refineries and pipeline companies, enabling it to approach a wide range of companies and foundations for support.
