Post-Katrina Grantmaking by Greater New Orleans Foundation Tops $41 Million
The Greater New Orleans Foundation has announced that it has awarded 3,290 grants totaling nearly $41.4 million for recovery efforts in the city since Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast three years ago.
In the immediate aftermath of the storm, GNOF awarded $1 million to support the creation of the Unified New Orleans Plan, which enabled the city to later secure infrastructure funding from the federal government. The plan revealed that the city lacked affordable housing stock, leading GNOF to form the Community Revitalization Fund, which will provide $25 million for mixed-income housing over five years. Since it was established last November, the fund has raised $16 million from sixteen organizations, including the Blue Moon Fund and the Annie E. Casey, Bill & Melinda Gates, Ford, Rockefeller, and Kellogg foundations. To date, the fund has distributed twenty-two grants totaling nearly $8.5 million.
Building on the idea that New Orleans draws its stability from the health of the surrounding region, GNOF also has established community-based affiliates in St. Bernard and Plaquemines parishes, where they are working to train community-based leaders and create opportunities for further investment.
"Philanthropy is playing a major role in the recovery of this great city," said Ellen Lee, interim president of GNOF. "Our partners — whether they be individuals, corporations, or national foundations — have all contributed to the recovery of this irreplaceable American city."
Philanthropy Fuels New Orleans Recovery.
