University of Texas Medical Branch Receives $800,000 Pledge for Aging Research
The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston has received a pledge of $800,000 from oil developer George P. Mitchell for the Sealy Center on Aging, Guidry News Service reports.
The grant, which the university will match, will be used to fund research on the health and quality of life of the elderly in two Sealy Center programs. Part of Mitchell's support will be used to establish a professorship in aging and health at the World Health Organization/Pan American Health Organization Collaborating Center on Aging and Health, which coordinates studies examining the healthcare implications of aging populations and provides technical expertise to researchers at PAHO-member countries to improve the health of older people.
In addition, the grant will be used to hire a scientist for the Claude Pepper Older Americans Independence Center, who will investigate frailty and muscle mass issues among senior citizens.
"Mr. Mitchell's endorsement of our work to improve the lives of senior citizens is crucial to the nation's growing elderly population," said UTMB president David L. Callender. "His generosity not only builds upon his legacy of giving here at UTMB but also further elevates the Sealy Center on Aging's distinction as one of the nation's premiere geriatric research programs."
Mitchell Commits $800,000 to UTMB's Sealy Center on Aging.
