New York Community Trust Awards $8 Million to Local Nonprofits
The New York Community Trust has announced 119 grants totaling nearly $8 million to nonprofits in the New York City area.
Grants were awarded to organizations working to improve the lives of all New Yorkers in the areas of education, arts, and the humanities; health and people with special needs; community development and the environment; and children, youth, and families.
Grants included $100,000 to the Harlem Children Society to expand a science education and research program that pairs poor, minority students with scientists from local research institutions; $150,000 to the Girl Scouts Council of Greater New York for a career exploration program for girls attending low-performing middle schools; $60,000 to Brooklyn Legal Services to help women leave abusive relationships; $80,000 to Global Kids for workshops focused on human rights, understanding Islam, and diffusing racial tensions; and $60,000 to Community Voices Heard in support of its efforts to encourage poor people to vote.
