Herb Alpert Foundation Awards $1.2 Million for Scholarships for Young Artists

Herb Alpert Foundation Awards $1.2 Million for Scholarships for Young Artists

The California State Summer School for the Arts (InnerSpark) has announced a $1.2 million grant from the Herb Alpert Foundation for scholarships.

The grant will provide, on an annual basis, financial aid to eighteen high school students through the Herb Alpert Scholarships for Emerging Young Artists program, which is coordinated with the California State Summer School Arts Foundation. The scholarships include three awards in each of six categories: animation and film/video; creative writing; dance; music; theater; and visual arts.

One student in each category will receive up to $40,000 over four years, while two others will receive single-year awards of $2,500. Each student awarded a scholarship will also receive advice from InnerSpark's financial aid consultant to ensure that students maximize their chances of receiving a good financial aid package at the college, conservatory, or professional training program of their choice.

For the past ten years, the Alpert Foundation has partnered on the Emerging Young Artists Awards with the California Alliance for Arts Education. "As that program was reaching its conclusion, we knew the benefits of helping those students had been so dramatic that we wanted to continue, expand, and enhance the awards," said Alpert Foundation president Rona Sebastian. "The natural choice was to seek a partnership with a strong educational institution already focused on recognizing and nurturing talented young artists."
