UN Foundation Mobilizes Millions to Help End Malaria Deaths in Africa
To coincide with activities related to the first-ever World Malaria Day on April 25, the Washington, D.C.-based United Nations Foundation has announced a new grassroots campaign to help eliminate malaria deaths by distributing long-lasting insecticide-treated nets throughout areas of Africa that most need them.
Part of the previously announced Malaria Partnership, which is working to raise $200 million to prevent malaria deaths, the campaign is designed to mobilize more than twenty-five million people across the world through businesses and religious and civic organizations. Partners in the effort include Nothing But Nets, the United Methodist Church, Lutheran World Relief, Youth Service America, Junior Chamber International, the National Basketball Association, the
Women's National Basketball Association, and Major League Soccer.
"Eliminating malaria is going to take millions of people," said UN Foundation president Timothy E. Wirth. "Whether you're a basketball or soccer fan, someone buying a plane ticket to visit a friend, or a family going to church on Sunday or synagogue on Saturday, you can help save a life by sending a net. And if enough of us do this, we can cover the continent and prevent millions of deaths each year."
