Christian Brothers University Receives Challenge Grant From Kresge Foundation
Memphis-based Christian Brothers University has announced a $1 million challenge grant from the Kresge Foundation for the renovation and construction of buildings in its School of Sciences.
To receive the grant, CBU must secure an additional $2.9 million in new private gifts, pledges, and grants by January 1, 2009. To date, CBU has raised $10.3 million of the $14.2 million needed to renovate Assisi Hall and construct the Cooper-Wilson Center for Life Sciences.
When completed, the projects will more than double the school's classroom and laboratory space and will enable the university to better prepare students for graduate, medical, and pharmacy schools and work in the health related and biomedical industries. The center will include larger faculty offices, a student lounge, and multi-purpose rooms for research, conferences, and meetings. Both projects are expected to be completed by August 2008.
"I am heartened at the confidence demonstrated by the Kresge Foundation in awarding our institution this challenge grant, and on behalf of our entire university community, I thank the foundation most sincerely for its generous expression of support," said CBU president Brother Vincent Malham. "At the same time, I am fully cognizant of the challenge we face to raise the remaining $2.9 million to qualify for the grant. Because of the strategic importance of the project, both for our students and for the Memphis community, I am confident we can do it."
