MacArthur Announces 2008 Awards for Creative, Effective Nonprofits

MacArthur Announces 2008 Awards for Creative, Effective Nonprofits

The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation has announced that eight organizations in six countries have been selected to receive the third annual MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions.

Despite their diverse missions — from helping public radio thrive in the digital age, to defending human rights in Nigeria, to seeking a more fair juvenile justice system in the United States — the organizations share common attributes. All have demonstrated significant impact in their fields and spurred significant change with modest budgets. Each organization will receive up to $500,000 — a large sum given that their annual budgets are each less than $2.5 million — for a range of purposes, including the acquisition of office space, development of training and research facilities, technology upgrades, and new research.

This year's recipients are Centro de Derechos Humanos de la Montaņa in Guerrero State, Mexico; the Philadelphia-based Juvenile Law Center; the Kazan Human Rights Center in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russian Federation; the Legal Defence and Assistance Project in Lagos, Nigeria; Chicago-based Project Match; the Public Radio Exchange in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Sangath in Goa, India; and the Tany Meva Foundation in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

"From its founding, the MacArthur Foundation has sought out people and organizations that have the creativity, energy, and breadth of vision to change the world for the better," said MacArthur president Jonathan Fanton. "These imaginative and influential small organizations have an impact altogether disproportionate to their size. They are addressing problems and injustices, finding fresh solutions, and proving themselves as leaders and innovators."
