UN Foundation Launches Partnership to End Malaria Deaths in Africa
In partnership with the United Methodist Church and Lutheran World Relief, the United Nations Foundation has announced the launch of a new global initiative to raise $200 million to fight malaria in Africa.
Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Malaria Partnership will work to educate and mobilize the UMC and LWR's combined constituency of more than twenty million people; provide financial support to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria; support malaria prevention and health system strengthening efforts such as the Nothing But Nets campaign and the Roll Back Malaria Partnership; and advance the churches' on-the-ground health missions.
"In today's interdependent world, we can't successfully address the great global challenges unless businesses and NGOs, philanthropic leaders and the faith community work together," said UN Foundation chairman Ted Turner. "This groundbreaking new partnership...will take our malaria prevention efforts to an entirely new level. Our collective efforts demonstrate resolve across faiths, countries, and sectors to stamp out malaria."
