Global Fund Commits $25 Million to Fight AIDS in Haiti
PND - Global Fund Commits $25 Million to Fight AIDS in Haiti
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis & Malaria has announced nearly $25 million in grants to establish a program to help fight the spread of AIDS in Haiti. It is the first such commitment by the Fund to a Caribbean or Latin American Country, and also the first to a country outside of Africa.
Under the agreement, the Fund will send $24.7 million to Haiti, the poorest country in the Western hemisphere, over the next two years to help the government battle the pandemic there. The grant will provide additional resources to expand existing treatment and prevention programs that have proven effective and will also support the development of communications strategies that coincide with various marketing efforts, including the distribution of fifteen million condoms. The program will be administered by a coalition that brings together the Haitian government, seventeen local civil society and private sector organizations, and various multilateral organizations and bilateral donors. A private sector foundation and the United Nations Development Programme will oversee the disbursement of funds to community-based organizations throughout the country.
"Haiti's program embodies the spirit of partnership that the Global Fund seeks to create, bringing together all sectors of society to ensure a more rapid and effective response to HIV/AIDS," said Global Fund executive director Richard Feachem. "It is also innovative for its insistence on the inseparability of prevention and treatment approaches to addressing HIV/AIDS. These agencies have proposed to build on their current successes in addressing the epidemic in Haiti. This stands as an example to other countries as they prepare future proposals to the Global Fund."
It is estimated that, last year alone, Haiti, with a total population of 7.6 million, lost 30,000 people to AIDS, roughly twice the number of people who died from the disease in the United States, which has a population of 287 million.
