Ford Foundation Marks 45th Anniversary of Brazil Office
In conjunction with the forty-fifth anniversary of its office in Rio de Janeiro, the Ford Foundation is celebrating nearly half a century of grantmaking in Brazil.
The office was established in 1962 to help reduce poverty and injustice in South America's largest country and provide support for research centers, academic institutions, and movements that promote democratic values. It has since expanded its focus to include natural resources, land access, and development opportunities for disadvantaged communities, and has taken on issues related to governance and civil society, human rights, reproductive health, gender and sexuality, and HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention.
Subsequently, Ford furthered educational opportunities for individuals from underrepresented communities with the 2001 launch of its International Fellowships and Pathways to Higher Education programs. And in 2004, the Rio office created a Special Media Fund to help promote public dialogue about the rights and autonomy of Brazilian media. The office's grantmaking has averaged $13 million annually for the past decade.
