Elie Wiesel Awarded 2007 Koret Prize
The Koret Foundation has announced that Nobel laureate, author, and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel has been awarded the Koret Prize, which is awarded periodically to individuals who make extraordinary contributions in areas of interest to the San Francisco-based foundation, notably Jewish life and culture.
The 2007 prize includes a cash award of $250,000 to the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity, which was established in New York City shortly after Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1986.
The author of more than forty books, Wiesel is best known for the memoir Night, an account of his experience as a teenager in the Nazi death camps. The latest edition of the book, translated into English by Wiesel's wife, Marion, includes a substantive new preface in which the author reflects on his lifelong dedication to ensuring that the world never forgets man's capacity for inhumanity to man.
"We are awed and inspired by Professor Wiesel's tireless and enduring commitment to Jewish survival in every sense of the word," said Koret Foundation president Tad Taube. "It is an honor for us to award him with the Koret Prize."
