Adelson Family Foundation Awards $4.5 Million to Shalem Center in Jerusalem
The Las Vegas-based Adelson Family Foundation has announced a $4.5 million grant to the Shalem Center in Jerusalem, which will help create the Adelson Institute for Strategic Studies.
The institute will focus on strategies to address the challenges currently facing Israel and the West, and through a program of research, publications, education, public events, and conferences will work to advance the spread of human rights and democracy, opposition to totalitarian regimes, and defense of national sovereignty and a Jewish state.
In an attempt to engage the broader academic and policy communities, the institute also will invite visiting scholars to analyze and make policy recommendations about issues of global importance. The institute will hold its first gathering, the Conference on Democracy and Security, which President George W. Bush is expected to address, in Prague this June.
"We believe this institute will help secure values we hold dear, and we want to focus on securing that future," said Dr. Miriam Adelson. "It's important to Israel, to the Middle East, and to the whole world that democracy, human rights, and freedom are safeguarded for generations to come."
